Mamie Gilbert Obituary

The soul of Mamie Gilbert, affectionately known to many as “Moot”, was returned to The Creator on December 23, 2019 as she was physically and
spiritually surrounded by her loved ones at home in Piscataway, NJ. Mamie was the last giant of a Fleming generation, a woman of strong
conviction and wisdom. She had a generous heart that loved unconditionally. Until her very last day, she was known to make you laugh, just as quickly as
she could make you cry with raw truth and her infamous “Mamie-isms”. Her unshakeable faith, wit, style, grace, humor, honesty, and unconditional love
will continue to live through her legacy of memories and by way of her offspring that have now been left behind. She touched the lives of so many-
offering love, wisdom, and hope.

On June 29, 1926, Mamie was born to John L. Fleming Sr. and Mariah West in Elko, Georgia. She was the second of six children. Preceding her in death,
were all her siblings - John L . Fleming Jr., Rev. Willie B. Fleming, Rev. Mark Fleming, Major Fleming, and Louisa Coates.

Mamie was educated in Cuthbert, Ga. and married the late Willie Gilbert Sr. She gave birth to Evelyn Singleton, Louise Wilson, Willie Gilbert Jr. (who
preceded her in death), twins Kimberly Nur-Uddin (Husband Faheem) , Kenneth Gilbert (who preceded her in death) and Linda Gilbert. Mamie
moved from Georgia to Patterson, NJ in 1950, then Passaic, NJ in 1955. She settled in Newark, NJ in 1959. She worked until she was about 75 years old,
as a charwoman throughout West Orange and Livingston. Mamie was a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church and later became a
member of Welcome Baptist Church where she has served faithfully as church member, church mother, and member of the Senior Choir.

In addition to her children Mamie Leaves behind 10 grandchildren Jackie, David (Wife Tanya), Salim, Kristen ( Husband Rob), Jatasha (Husband Sa’id),
Latoya, Kenneth (Wife Valarie), Elijah, Ibn, Raqiah, Aziah, King, 9 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren, her beloved niece Eva Price
as well as sisters in law Sarah & Larcine Fleming and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
